Spectrum, Pastrol Levin prospects

Special corres. Wellington The Foxton trainer Dave Enright looks to have a royal chance of landing a , big double at' this afternoon’s Levin meeting. Enright, has Spectrum in- the feature, the Ryder Stakes for two-year-olds, and Pastfol in the Levin Winter Cup, the first leg of the double; Both appear to be winning prospects. Spectrum is a colt by In The' Purple, that fine stayer of: sires, out; of Suntime and his two races have brought, a third at Carterton in his ‘debut and then a fine win in the Triton Stakes at Foxton in May. - . ‘ ' '

The northern bid for the Ryder Stakes is strong. Great Avon has a brace of fourths to his credit, Sb Bold is a last-start winner at Te Awamutu, while Trendy won at the beginning of the month at Avondale. The Drummer, which ran fifth on the first day at Trentham, Manno Moume, Romany Eyes, Empress Lu, and, if he starts, Prestige, give the northern stables the strongest possible hand. Pastrol’s task in the Levin

Winter Cup has been made easier with the scratching of of London Trader. Pastrol was fifth in’.her last start in the Tauranga Classic at the Bay of Plenty meeting- last month. She is a good class mare and with this reasonable draw she will be hard to beat. Jancy Pallan looks the hardest for Pastrol to beat. He won at Wanganui during the Queen’s, Birthday holiday. Last- .time he-ran fourth at Hastings last month and his chances of success must be good. • i Master Token did not race at Trentham. He showed his class through with a good second to Rising' Damp in the Simmons Handicap at Wanganui. He is, as well, a previous winner on the course.

Gavade, the topweight, failed quite badly in the Whyte Handicap after two wins at Awapuni. But he was a close and solid third in the Onslow Handicap at Trentham on Saturday and on that run he seems to be a top chance. The Vicar showed his class with a good effort for third

in the Whyte Handicap and though the track at Levin is unlikely to be as deep his chances must be respected. Volunteer showed his class with a fine first-up win at Hawera. He is a fine galloper and one which looks sure to have a royal show. Vermont has been running consistent races and was •second and fourth in two outings on his home course. Kerdizo, backed and beaten at : Trentham, will get another chance, while The Fox, Honey Bee, arid'Avonova also have to be considered. Form in the second leg of the double, the Modern Handicap, is hard to find. The best chance in this could be Eloop, which was backed down to favoiirtism in ■ the Parliamentary Handicap last Wednesday. He could do no better than fifteenth of 18 in that race but in the weaker field he looks a better chance. Indian Sun, in spite of some disappointing efforts at Trentham, and the three-year-old Ambitious could be the pick of the others.
