Foreign aid

Japanese visitors to Queenstown have no language problems when they stay at the Travelodge. The hotel has employed as one of its receptionists Miss Akiko Kotake, of Tokyo. Her ability to speak fluent Japanese and nearperfect English is proving invaluable, particularly when groups of older tourists from Japan are staying at the hotel. “While most Japanese under 30 can speak some English, the majority of those over 40 know only their own language,” she said.

Interest in the Japanese language in Queenstown is so keen that Miss Kotake is tutor for a 10-week course of night classes for 25 students. She has also been called upon to assist as interpreter on several occasions when Japanese visitors have been involved in medical emergencies. Miss Kotake is looking forward to sld-ing on Coronet Peak on her days off and being on hand, perhaps, to assist the ski, instructors overcome. any language barriers with their Japanese pupils.
