Free enterprise

Sir, — From the Pope’s statement in Brazil, “Any society which does not wish to be destroyed from within must establish a just social order,”- Varian J. Wilson (July 11) tries, I believe, to imply that the Pope had in mind “such as Russia and China.” Therefore in defence of the integrity of this great Pope and to the disappointment of- Varian J. Wilson I will quote from his address , to the United Nations: “In fifty years, the basis of a Christian economy would be laid.” — Yours, ■ etc.,. . B ' ■' W. H. DALY, Timaru. July 13, 1980. Sir, —- Congratulations to Frank Smith for getting right to the point-of free enterprise. The real heart of the matter is the" right of the individual to be responsible for himself. To survive, we need many responsible people.' Responsibility cannot be forced, it must be chosen and to have a choice one must be free. Therefore, only in a-free society can responsibility be improved. Can any system of Government control, ' like - welfarism, socialism or fascism truly promote initiative or responsibility? So in looking for an ideal scene to work-towards free, enterprise, limited government is the logical choice. Free, individual, private, . competitive enterprise is the system of variety and life. In it a person can enjoy the'grey stifling misery the other systems lead to ti reach the soaring material and spiritual achievements that only freedom can offer. —Yours,' etc., J TREVOR LOUDON. ' July 12, 1980.
