Fireless days
Sir, — L. H. Carmichael (July 9) over-emphasises my role in the clean air campaign; over 50 years those working for cleaner air ranged from Cora Wilding, Mabel Howard, Les Wilkinson, the Regional Planning Authority and through to hundreds more. True I have repeatedly stated that I believe that most forms of air
pollution represent energy waste. My pre-atomic power mentors taught me: “The saving of coal is one of the engineer’s chief problems. Coal can never be restored in the ages of man, and a coal-less country can never be anything but a thinly populated agricultural arid pastoral land.” I am convinced it is wasteful to burn coal on open fires. The Gas Company applied to close when Government stopped subsidies; no City Council involvement. The N.Z.C.A.S. supported South Island coal carbonising because it saves resources and produces clean energy. — Yours, ’etc., PATRICK NEARY. July 9, 1980.
