Surprise assault on man

PA Auckland An Orakei man opened his front door last evening to a balaclava-clad figure, who beat him repeatedly over the head and about the body with a one-metre iron bar. The occupant, a man in his 20s, suffered cuts to the head and severe bruising on his arms, when he tried to ward off the blows. He told the police he did not know his assailant, who had disappeared as quickly and mysteriously as he had arrived. It was not known whether the man with the iron bar was travelling in a car or on foot. Police "dogs were sent to the scene immediately, but late last night the man had not been apprehended. The police said they were told few; words were exchanged, and nothing of any consequence.
