Minister challenged
When the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) talked of a 32 per cent increase in education spending, he was not presenting all the relevant facts, the president, of the University Students’ Association, Mr Simon Wilson, has said.
; Mr Wellington had already jsaid that there would be jlittle or no supplementary ;estimates granted this year. ‘That meant the increase in (spending between last year ’and this year’s Budget was 121.7 per cent, most of which ’was taken up with long<overdue salary increases for ’secondary teachers. With inflation absorbing most of the rest. Mr Wellington knew as well as anybody else that the Budget i contained almost nothing for ’children in the classroom;He also knew there were big icuts in teacher training and jin university spending. Mr Wilson said.
