Management cleared of ‘illegal activity’

PA A u c kI a nd Police inquiries into allegations of defrauding the Housing Corporation and the Social Welfare Department over obtaining lowinterest finance and capitalising family benefits for home purchases had revealed that offences were confined to persons employed in the sales division of Universal Homes, Ltd, said Detective Sergeant H. Hawthorn. “Evidence available clearly indicates that the management of Universal Homes is not involved in any illegal activity,” he said. “The management of the company is co-operating fully with the police to

ensure that any illegal activity is uncovered, and no repetition occurs.” The governing director of Universal Homes, Mr W. Subritzky, said: “I consider that the taking of the files was quite unnecessary because full cooperation had been offered the police and they had complete access to all our systems. Only some individuals in the sales force apparently were involved and the management had no way of knowing this.

“In the cases where certificates of capitalisation were incorrectly obtained these had been returned to the child capitalisation department before the police were even involved.”
