Scott sets try-scoring record
It was a great day for the University A and Canterbury right wing, Randal Scott, at Lancaster Park Oval on Saturday.
The three tries he scored for his team against New Brighton in the final round of the C.S.B. Cup senior rugby contest brought him a century of touch-downs, and a new record for Christchurch interclub play. His second try brought his club career tally to 100, and his third try enabled him to break the record established by a Christchurch and All Black left wing. Ross Smith, between 1948 and 1962.
Scott, who is in his ninth season of senior rugby for the University club, was a popular winner of the Fletcher Humphries "Player of the Day" award.
He scored the first of his three tries in the eighth minute, capitalising on a precise cross-kick by his first fiveeighths. Kevin Jennings. He brought up his century in fine fashion 24 minutes after halftime; Gary Barkle, at halfback, punted and Scott chased and jumped high above three New Brighton men for the
catch, and then telescoped himself over the goal-line. The third try came eight minutes later, when Jennings deceived the defence with a dummy pass and then gave Scott a clear path to the corner.
Scott has now scored 14 tries this winter, only four short of his best tally for a season. He has at least three more games to play.
