The Budget

Sir, — I take strong exception to statements by W. Foot (July 9). He questioned the efficiency of farmers with their $2OO million in subsidies and goes on to ask whether the Government would be better to help industry to become more efficient. Mr Foot shows both ignorance and naivety when making wild statements about farming. He should ponder the unique position of farmers who buy everything retail' but sell their produce wholesale at a price the world will pay them, not necessarily what they need to cover costs of production. The subsidies are, in the main, production incentives which have to be earned by increased effort and better management. The manufacturing industry by contrast has enjoyed heavy tariff protection. This has been a contributory cause of the inefficiency which has crept in. The Government has decided that it is not prepared to condone and encourage this. — Yours, etc.,

D. T.' ARCHBOLD, Cheviot. July 10, 1980.
