Mission overrun
: NZPA San Jose. Costa Rica | Costa Rica is ready to give political asylum to about 100 Salvadorean' peasants who have occupied the Costa Rican Embassy in San Salvador. the Costa Rican Deputy ’Foreign Minister (Mr Bernd iNiehau) has said. ( Mr Niehau added that.; until now, the peasants had; 'made “no demands for asylum.” The Salvadoran Foreign Minister (Mr Fidel Chavez) has told the Costa Rican President (Mr Rodrigo Carazo) that his country’s security forces would not intervene at the occupied embassy, Mr Niehaus added.
Meanwhile, a spokesman at the occupied embassy told Agence France-Presse in a telephone interview that the occupiers had no hostages and had requested political asylum. The spokesman. who claimed to belong to the “People’s League of February 28” said that the taking of the embassy by landless peasants was intended to bring attention to “repression against the peasants” in San Salvador. The occupiers shot dead an embassy guard who tried to stop them as they broke in.
