Gentle cloths, hills
Recent Painting, an exhibition by Vlichael Eaton, at the C.S\. Gallery, until July >. Reviewed by David tokenshire. This exhibition is a small collection of paintings completed duriip the last two years. It kails into two sections, Quds and Hills, and Craigidurn landscapes. > How refreshing to md a painter able to resict his work to a convenkit size to hang in our horAs. All the paintings are mticulously r executed dfi they all bear scrutiy right up to the painti surface. \ All share a strange ligli and a particular stillness No air moves, no birds, nq people, this curious light! — the precise moment) seems distilled and to re-1 main fixed for all time. \ Clouds and Hills I found \ rather frightening but I 1 see the Craigieburn land- \ scapes as a great leap for- 1 ward.
I was impressed by the use of the big shingle slide filling all the foreground and up to the middle distance, compressing the rest of the mountains. It seems such a convincing way to suggest the immense scale of these high places. Again, this is a quiet exhibition but one found possessing a gentle excitement.
