Rescue from Profanity Cave

Good sense and sound preparation on the part of the three young men who were trapped in the Profanity Cave near Berlins this week contributed largely to their rescue. The persistence and skill of their rescuers was no less commendable. The cavers had made their intentions known and an early alarm was possible. They were adequately equipped with both food and clothing and, once trapped, they acted prudently. In such circumstances a bad move could have been disastrous. The satisfaction that everyone concerned can take from the successful rescue' highlights the importance of training, preparation, and proper gear

for all who undertake hazardous recreations. Although no less an effort would have been made to rescue a foolhardy or ill-equipped group from the cave, the outcome of the rescue need not be qualified on this occasion by thoughts that the people who needed help put their rescuers to avoidable pains. Cavers should know the risks they take and on this occasion they set an example to those who take risks without recognising the consequences for themselves and others. If the cavers were aided by a little good luck, they certainly deserved to have it when it seems that ill chance rather than bad management got them into trouble.
