Mr Suzuki gets nod

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo A former Minister of Agriculture, Mr Zenko Suzuki, yesterday became certain of becoming Japan’s Prime Minister next week in succession to the late Mr-Masayo-shi Ohira.

He will be named president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday, and formally designated Prime Minister in Parliament two days later. The decision of two leading contenders for the L.D.P. presidency to drop out of the race cleared the way for Mr Suzuki’s selection.

A spokesman for the L.D.P. said that a former Defence

Minister, Mr Yashuhiro Nakasone, aged 62. and a former Trade Minister, Mr Toshio Komoto, aged 69, decided to drop out for the sake of party unity. Mr Suzuki, aged 69, is a noted mediator with few political enemies. Mr Ohira died on June 12, less than two weeks before the L.D.P. retained power with an increased majority in a General Election. The election was called in May, after the former Prime Ministers, Mr Takeo Fukuda and Mr Takeo Miki, ordered their L.D.P. followers not to vote in an Oppositionsponsored no-confidence motion in Parliament.
