Shipping News Lyttelton coal facility work continues

The port of Lyttelton is taking Jts new role as an important base for coal exports to Japan quite seriously, with the continuing construction of new facilities at the coal stockpiling and loading area at Te Awaparahi Bay, between Sticking Point and Battery Point. The regrading and rolling of the No. 1 stockpile has been completed, except for the area occupied by coke breeze, and the new railway siding has been completed. The siding work necessitated the installation of two turnouts and the laying of about 430 metres of track.

The area alongside the new railway siding has been graded and rolled, and the standing capacity for rail waggons increased from 20 to 36. About 150 m of concrete dish channel has been installed to drain the area, and a settling tank has been provided. Concrete stormwater pipes have also been installed.

The woodchips reclaim conveyer hap been dismantled, and the drive motor and head pulley bearings reclaimed for use in the new conveyers, which will fun from the stockpile area to Uie loading berth at Cashin Quay. Work in the area will probably be expedited by the export of most of the present coke stockpiles this month aboard the bulk carriers Iron Baron and Iron Arnhem, both destined for Bell Bay, Tasmania. The first vessel to load coal for Japan as part of the new export contract is expected to be the Sunda Career, set to arrive at Lyttelton on July 27. ARRIVALS Nil. DEPARTURES Iris (11.50 a.m.), 4999.
