Sale of ponies
Sir, — We have noted with some concern the correspondence regarding the Kirwee annual hack and pony sale in May. Without entering into the pros and cons of the proper fate of unwanted horses and ponies, it is fair to say the sale has proved its worth as a market place to vendors and purchasers at all levels in the hack and pony world of the .South Island. We acknowledge the service the “pet food supplier” provides to other sections of the ani-mal-loving community, but we have no wish to be involved in such trade. We have decided our future policy will be to set an “upset” price, effectively making it uneconomic for a meat dealer to operate through the auction ring. We believe, that private treaty between vendor and purchaser is the proper method to be followed in these controversial sales. — Yours, etc., R. M. BASSETT, for the auctioneers, Kirwee Hack and Pony Sale. July 10, 1980.
