Dr Sharpies resigns
PA Auckland Dr Peter Sharpies, the race relations executive officer in the Race Relations Office, has resigned to join the Maori Affairs Department and work in Auckland as Director of Cultural Development. “In my new post I will be promoting Maori values and Maori culture,” he said. “I don’tyielieve people can
stand tall unless they feel right within themselves. What I am going to do is to develop the cultural values of Maoris so that they can express them and express them freely.” Dr Sharpies said the Maori language was far from lost. He would encourage its use not only in formal marae situations but in homes, k.e said.
