Burnside leads in squash

The young Burnside team took a two-point lead in the Wilson Shield men’s division one squash competition and effectively ended the hopes of the Blank Trophy winner, Christchurch I, on Tuesday evening. Another sensational win by Chris Wasley over Canterbury’s top player, Rod Hayes, set Burnside on its way to the 8-2 win. Hayes seemed loathe to exert much pace and pressure early on and Wasley took the first set and led in the second. Then Hayes started to attack more and played some nice angles into the nick. However, Wasley again fought back well after losing the second and third games to lead. 6-1. in the fifth. Hayes started to lob everything and recovered to 6-6. He then began hitting out, but Wasley regained control for a grand victory. , Don Preston was the only Christchurch player to win, a good effort after Ins lay-off. In an entertaining match he too many winners for Room Clements'. _ _ , . High School Old Boys I found a below-strength University team tougher than expected and won only on a points countback.

Barrie Matthews was in good form and eventually easily beat the Old Boys No. 1, Lawrence Skurr. He played some good attacking squash and. although Skurr dug in to win the second, the University player won in four games, regularly hitxing the nick m his final game. John Tolchard and John Oakley were in good touch, but Matthew Clements played as if suffering from an “overdose” of squash against a grateful Malcolm Forster. In the other “top six” contest, Sumner scored its first points of the new competition, with John Christensen just too good for Linwood’s Gary Monk. The women's competition continued its inevitable course, with High -School Old Boys increasing its lead thanks to a tight battle between Christchurch and Sumner. Points:
