Only 50,000 were struck then and demand for the proof sovereign was so overwhelming that in the UK a. ballot had to be held to decide which collectors would be lucky! Since release September 1979 this coin has almost doubled in value. ; M . ■- £ . NOW, the 1980 gold proof,sovereign has been released,-.but numismatists are already predicting that even the iugnjetj. mintage will not satisfy the’demand. ■, * MAXIMUM MINTAGE 100,000 OF WHICH ONLY A MINOR PERCENTAGE HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED TO NEW ZEALAND COLLECTORS OF THE 100 000 MINTAGE 10,000 are reserved for sale later in 1980 in boxed sets containing gold proof £5, £2, sovereign and’half-sovereign. Also. 60,000 are reserved for UK collectors, leaving only 30,000 1980 proof sovereigns for sale in the rest of the world. New Zealand has only been allocated a small percentage of this balance. First option has already been given to regular British . Royal Mint collectors in N.Z., but a small quantity has been reSe on a first come - first served basis, with a limit of 3 coins per collector. Immediate refunds will be made to unsuccessful applicants. TO BE STRUCK BY THE BRITISH ROYAL MINT IN PROOF FINISH A proof coin is considered by numismatists to be the supreme example of coin making. Unlike a circulating coin the proof version uses a specially selected blank which is struck wnth considerable force between carefully prepared and ultra sharp dies. This blow presses the design on each side of the blank. The proof is further enhanced by an attractive frosting of the relief design and this is achieved by blasting the dies with immensely h ar< \rhe table of the proof coin die is painstakingly polished with diamond paste to achieve a mirror like finish. The coin is then impressed with extra firm pressure to ensure the clarity of detail that is unique to a proof coin. Each proof com is inspected and great care is taken to ensure that at no stage in the coin’s creation is the meticulous standard required tor proof coin manufacture compromised. t • vi „>> The finish shows to perfection the now famous Benedetto Pistrucci design of St George slaying the Dragon on the ■reverse (tails), and the equally beautiful Arnold Machin effigy 7 of the.
