Changes in school year ‘unwarranted’

PA Wellington The Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) has told Parliament that he did not think major changes in the structure of the school year were warranted at this stage.

A Working party, set up in 1976, which reported last year said that many organisations would like to see changes in the school year but could not find a proposal that would get majority support, Mr Wellington said. “I believe major changes in the structure of the school year are not warranted at this stage,” he said.

Mr Wellington was replying to Mr J. G. Elliott (Nat., , Whangarei), who asked when the Eeducation Department would rearrange the school year so that workers’ holidays could be better spread than they were at present.

Replying to Labour’s shadow Minister, of Education, Mr C. R. Marshall (Wanganui), Mr Wellington said that he had decided against introducing a pilot scheme for a change in the school year because of the divided opinion on how this should be done. , A four-term year was one of the changes which had been suggested.
