Top job not for Sanjay

NZPA-Reuter New Delhi

The Indian Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi) resisted mounting pressure at the week-end to make her son Sanjay — newly elected as a member of Parliament — chief minister of the huge northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Legislators of the ruling Congress (I) Party in Uttar Pradesh voted unanimously in favour of making Mr Gandhi the chief minister.

But Mrs Gandhi, who had already said he would not be given the job, told them they should accept anyone nominated by the party high command. Earlier, party high command sources said Mr Vishwanath Pratap Singh, a member of Parliament and former minister, may be appointed to head the government in Uttar Pradesh if Mr Gandhi remained unavailable.

Mrs Gandhi had been under pressure from youth Congress (I) members and several senior leaders to install her son as . chief minister. • :•

Mr Gandhi, aged 33, has made no comment.
