A member of the Christchurch Boys’ High School chamber music orchestra, Simon Barret, aged 15, practises on his cello before playing with the orchestra in the Christchurch district finals of the Wales Bank school music contest on Saturday. The orchestra won first place in the large instrumental section of the contest. The Christchurch Conservatoire Chamber orchestra was second, and the Christchurch Girls’ High School string orchestra was third.
First in the small instrumental section was the Altiora Peto Trio. The Sartory Quartet was second and the Christchurch
Boys’ High School Trio, third. The Rangi Ruru Chorale was first in the vocal section, and the Christchurch Girls’ High School Singers, second. The Armagh Choir and Burnside High School Chorale were third equal. The contest attracted entries from 31 instrumental groups and eight vocal groups, involving more than 270 secondary school pupils. It was held in the Christchurch Boys’ High School assembly hall on Saturday and yesterday. Mrs B. Webster, of Auckland, judged the vocal sections of the competition, and Miss E. Jensen judged the instrumental sections.
