Death of Mr Wallace Young

PA Napier A well-known racing identity, Mr Wallace Young has died in Napier, aged 86. Mr Young was the last survivor of five South Is-land-born brothers, all of whom were jockeys. The others were Bill, Bob, Harold and George. Wallace Young’s career in racing spanned about 70 years — from the early 1900 s to the early 19705.

He rode on the flat and over jumps until the 19205, then turned to training. Mr Young rode his first winner in 1920, on Adria in the Foxton Cup. The achievement was especially memorable as the riders of the second and third placegetters were his more experienced brothers, Bill and Bob.

Wallace Young trained one of New Zealand’s best jumpers of this century — Master Meruit — which won three Hawke’s Bay Steeples and a Grand National Steeples. He won a New Zealand Cup with Dormant. Mr Young is survived by his wife, Kathleen, whom he married 62 years ago.
