My Star looks sound chance at Rangiora

By

G. K. YULE

My Star did remarkably- well for a C2 pacer to finish third to Dreamy Dragon and Heather Chief in the Queen s Birthday Stakes at Ashburton last Monday. He will have to show very little improvement on that effort to win the Three-year-old Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble at Rangiora Raceway today.

My Star, a member of Robin Asquith’s team at Rangiora, has struck a purple patch of form in recent weeks, his last five starts having resulted in a win, two seconds, a third and a fourth. However, it was his Ashburton effort . which points to. a bold run today. He was in the open for much of the way and fought on gamely three lengths and a neck from the winner. Irish Boa, too, racing pleasingly at Ashburton, holding .on for a fairly close fourth after receiving a splendid trail. He gained a dashing win over 3200 m on the first day at Ashburton and is obviously at ease on rain-affected tracks. Heather Chief is set a much more difficult assignment than at Ashburton where he finished second after starting from 20m. • He starts from the same handicap mark today, but has a larger field of less-ex-perienced horses to contend with. He looked all over a winner at Ashburton until Dreamy Dragon came on the scene and he held on gamely for second. That run suggests he will beat most in this field.

The highly-rated Dundas will be having only his fourth race start. He missed the start at Oamaru on May--10 at his most recent appearance and made ground for sixth. If he moves off smoothly, he should take a prominent part in the finish. Lord Tarport, a surprise second to Tribute over 3200 m at Ashburton last Saturday, Capinsay and Logan Chance appeal most of the others.. The Oxford Handicap, for C2 trotters, and the G. I. Morris Memorial Handicap, for C2 pacers, are the other legs of the treble. Air Pocket, a stylish winner in both of his starts at Ashburton,' will probably 'be favourite for the trotters’ race, but he will not need to lose too much ground at the start if he is to notch his third successive win as the distance of the race is 2000 m. Daynoma and Premature could be the pick of the others. ’ Bonnie Lass, Forest Wind and Chance Fortune could be as good as any in the final leg, which has drawn

an open field. Gikama Dee, Overdale Lad, Stop the Clock, Cousteau, and Royal Scotch will be other prospects. RACE 4 SECOND COURSE TREBLE T.A.B. TREBLE
