Top-ranked pair beaten

The defeats of two Canterbury division-one selections by division-two - choices, plus a tie that never was, marked the sixth round on Saturday of the IA grade badminton competition. ! David Ross, whose form has ■been a little uneven this season, jwas obviously out to prove a point when he met Mike Nolan, ! who beat him for a place in the division-one side. Ross had to work fairly hard ■ to win the first game, 15-11, but he easily took the second, 15-4. He hammered bis point home even harder when he also beat Nolan at their two doubles meetings. 1 Ross Campbell was the other division-one player to suffer a surprise defeat. He lost in three games to Brian Williams, who overcame a slow start to play some excellent badminton in the .(deciding game. i In another upset Don Le Page 'showed that experience can still counter vouth when he beat the promising Mark Chambers in straight games. Chambers’ older brother. Stephen fared better in Staking 11 points off Peter Whit'ing, the winner the previous 1 week-end of the South Island singles title. , There was also a very comAmendable performance from iAdrienne Williamson, a 14-year-old making her A grade debut. | She did not win a match, but iplaved determinedly in all three land her shot-making and tacitical awareness were well in advance of her years. ! Railway I had to fight a reariguard action after losing three i of the four singles to UniverIsity. However, it swept through I the doubles without much dif!Acuity for a 5-3 win and still has la clear lead in the championship. i It was. in fact, a round of [close contests with four of the ■five ties resulting in 5-3 de[cisions. The Hagley club enjoyed a fruitful day. its three (teams all being victorious. I The competition has been ;

tempdrarily thrown out of gear by the desire of Canterbury, which is at the bottom of the table, to withdraw on the grounds that it is unable to field a team of reasonable strength. Canterbury’s tie against Knox on Saturday was not played, and a committee decision will be made this week as to whether Canterbury will be released, if not, it will meet Knox at some future date.

The association has settled another dispute by confirming Railway’s 6-2 win over South Brighton II in the round before Saturday’s. Some of the South Brighton members had not been satisfied with the result because their team was credited with losses bv default to a player who.- through injury, was not available to play.
