Another purse to Gy de
"I’ll probably go a month without winning anything now,” joked Bevan Gyde after the latest in an astonishing run of cash cycling successes on Saturday. The sprint winner of the Jameson Memorial Cup, after a 56km handicap race, Gyde thus extended still further his remarkable record of not having been out of the first six placings in his eight starts in cash ranks. “I don't quite know what it is,” said the 17-year-old Gyde, but I’ve certainly got more enthusiasm than back when I was a junior novice.” And he had to admit that the healthy purses he has been collecting did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm. But Gyde also made clear that he felt the strength of one of
his co-markers in Saturday’s race at West Melton was a factor in his victory. Chris Giddens attacked his 3Jmin bunch from the outset—Frank Hooper and Steve Roulston were the others —and rode away after Bkm. That aggressive influence out of the way, the remaining trio settled down to a steady ride, picked up Giddens after he had had 16km by himself, and eventually hit the front with 9km to ride. "If he’d waited till much later, he probably could have blown us apart,” said Gyde, but xvith them all there, the promising junior had far too good a sprint for the rest, overcoming Roulston’s lead-out, then triumphing by a clear length. After a very mediocre weekend on the West Coast. Steve
Doherty returned to more familiar pastures to win fastest time again, maintaining a clean record In Canterbury races. He had Clayton Yaxley and Neil Wyllie to beat for the scratchman’s honours, Terry Gyde (the winner’s older brother), the national 40km champion, being absent with illness. Results:—
