Yachting fleet almost halved
Olympic yachting fleets in Tallinn have been almost halved by the Moscow boycott.
The regatta on the Gulf of Finland port has attracted only 23 nations, compared to the 40 which took part in the 1976 Olympic regatta at Kingston. According to statistics compiled by the International Yacht Racing Union, some of the six Olympic classes will have less than half the number of competing crews compared with the last Olympics. The I.Y.R.U. — the world administering authority of yacht racing — compiled its
statistics from lists of nations and entries telexed to it by the regatta organisers in Tallinn. Only eight nations have entered all six classes — the Soviet Union itself, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and Brazil. The fleet for the sleek Tornado catamaran class will consist of a maximum of only nine yachts.
The entries for the six classes, with the Kingston fleet size in brackets, are: Soling 12 (24); Star 11 (Tempest 16); Flying Dutchman 14 (20); Tornado nine! (14); 470 class 13 (28); Finn 17 (28).
