Three teams move clear in league

Western, Harwell United, and Woolston W.M.C. continued to move clear of the others teams in the Hertz Soccer League, and have virtually made certain that one of them will be the northern zone representative to play off for a national league place next year. All three had comfortable winning margins, while at the bottom of the table. Technical, Northern Hearts and Timaru Citv all lost and in the process have set themselves a difficult final part of the league programme. Western had to soak up several periods of pressure from ain in-form Shamrock team before winning, 4-1, at Riccarton Domain. Shamrock took the lead in the sixth minute through Peter Schuyt, but Western scored twice before helf-time.

Matthew Eggelstone scored the first with a long range effort which flew over the head of the young Shamrock goal-keeper, Neil Caswell, and John Brand added the second. Shamrock’s lack of penetration proved costly and further goals by Brand and Phil Ayers gave Western a deserved, if slightly flattering, win. Halswell kept one point behind Western with a comfortable. 3-0, wi.n over Timaru City at Halswell Domain. John Stevens gave Halswell a half-time lead, and

Mark Lanauze and Paul Welford added second-half goals. The result means that, with half its games completed, Halswell has conceded only two goals. Woolsto.n kept handy to the pace with a 4-1 win over Northern Hearts at Burnside Park. Woolston scored twice in the opening 15 minutes and was never seriously threatened in a highly entertaining match. Michael Millward scored twice, one from the penalty spot, Richard Mulligan and Graham Dacombe once each for Woolston, and Bevan Griffiths scored for Hearts.

Nomads United squandered a 2-0 half-time advantage to draw, 2-2, with New Brighton, also at Burnside Park. Tony Banks and Brendan Rassie scored for Nomads while, in a strong secondhalf fight-back, Jeff Neal, from the penalty spot, and Peter Cook scored for Brighton. Cashmere Wanderers had a good, 3-1, win over Technical at Somerfield Park. All the goals came before the interval, Tony Orpswood and Graham Ford (2) scoring for Cashmere, and Technical's goal-keeper. Stephen Reeves, scored from the penalty spot. HERTZ LEAGUE
