U.S. tilt pleases China

NZPA-Reuter Peking The Chinese Senior VicePremier (Mr Deng Xiaoping) has expressed China’s satisfaction at a reported tilt by the United States away from Moscow and towards Peking. He also repeated his desire to retire as a vicepremier in August. “I think that by that time my mind will not be functioning so well and I would also like to live a little longer,” he said. Mr Deng is 76. Diplomatic sources said the tilt towards Poking had been implicit in United States policy for some time, but this was believed to be the first reported occasion that it had been stated explicitly.

It comes after a successful visit by China’s top defence official, Vice-Premier Geng Biao, to Washington, where he received American approval for the purchase of non-lethal . defence equipment. This could include trucks, radar, troop transport helicopters and planes and other equipment. ■Mr Deng said that in the past the United States and “some other countries” had posed the main security threat to China. This had changed during the 19705.
