H.A.R.T. grows stronger
The scope of the Halt All Racist Tours organisaion has been widened by its amalgamation with the Coalition Against Apartheid. They will use the name, H.A.R.T. H.A.R.T. has also emphasised that-its priority-is to. stop the proposed 1981 Springbok tour of New Zealand.. x , “This campaign is. well under way as people who are opposed to racist sport are determined that this tour must and will be stopped,” according to a newsletter from the organisation. . The newsletter said that at a combined meeting of the local - branches of H.A.R.T. and the Coalition Against Apartheid, last week, it was decided to amalgamate the two groups into a united front against anartheid. = ; The i amalgamation , was an attempt to unite and strengthen the movement
and to provide a more efficient working base through which the public could express its opposition to “the oppressive system of apartheid.” It combined the campaigns of the two organisations to support the black people of southern Africa in their struggle against apartheid. The campaigns to end New Zealand’s diplomatic, economic, and cultural contacts with South Africa would be continued by H.A.R.T. The newsletter said these campaigns included efforts to: close the South African Consulate, to end investment by New Zealand companies in South Africa (notably the New Zealand Insurance and South British Insurance companies), and the service clubs’ campaign which sought to end cultural contacts with South Africa.
