Price of coal to rise
Gaal for home use is likely to cost up to 35 cents a bag more in Christchurch from Monday. After Government approval. State coal mines have increased their wholesale price an average of 14.6 per cent Coal merchants in Christchurch would be entitled to raise their prices
from Monday, said the chairman of the Canterbury Coal Merchants’ Association (Mr D. Mitchell) yesterday. Smaller firms unable to stockpile big quantities of coal would be forced to raise prices. All coal merchants had to pay back-dated pricerises to May 1. “This can’t be done but it seems to
have been done,” he said. Many • customers had rushed supplies and where most normally took two bags, orders of up to five bags were not uncommon. Mr Mitchell said that delivery charges would be reviewed by individual dealers, particularly because of higher petrol prices.
