Youth jailed for assault

A High Court judge in Auckland has sentenced a youth, aged 17, to 15 months imprisonment for his part in an assault on two policemen. The youth, John Hutchins, employed by the special work scheme, was in a car with friends when they were stopped by the police in Ponsonby. The police said the group attacked the policemen, causing minor injuries to one and knocking the other unconscious.

When sentencing Hutchins, Mr Justice Thorp said he took account his age and the fact that no weapon was used.

He sentenced Hutchins to 15 months’ imprisonment on each charge — 'two of assault, and one of attempting to escape custody. The charges will be served concurrently. Hutchins had pleaded guilty on all counts.
