Auckland easily wins Russell Grace title

PA Hastings The Auckland women’s golf team won its fifth consecutive Russell Grace interprovincial teams’ championship when it beat WaikatoKing Country, 4-1, in the final round played at Hastings yesterday. The win gave Auckland an unbeaten record for a maximum 12 points to head off Canterbury and WaikatoKing Country who finished second-equal on nine.

The Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay team, although beaten in two round-3, finished in fourth position to improve on its fifth placing in- last year’s championship at Lochiel, Hamilton. Auckland dominated the tournament from the start, and out of 30 individual games, it dropped only 5J matches.

The team’s performance was epitomised .by its No. 1, Mrs Cherry Kingham, who for the first time in eight Russell Grace championships had six straight victories.

Mrs Kingham was unbeaten at the 1975 event, played at Invercargill, and the 1978 championship at Waitikiri, but this year was the first time she has recorded six wins from six matches. Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay’s No. 1, Kaylene Burns, was the only other player in the field to record six wins and she took the Eileen Nutt Memorial Badge for the best performance at the tournament from Mrs Kingham after a count-back on individual winning margins. Only, three other com-

petitors in the field of 80 players finished the tournament unbeaten. They were Canterbury’s Mrs Vai Cullen, a veteran of 31 Russell Grace championships, Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley’s Kaye Johnson and Northland’s Elizabeth Boleyn.

Canterbury performed solidly throughout the tournament and deserved its second placing, an improvemeht on last year’s performance when it finished third. The North and South Island women’s golf teams to compete at Miramar in a 54hole stroke tournament at Queen’s Birthday week-end were announced after the tournament. They are;—
