Maximum points awarded
Christchurch won the game (10-4), but its opponent, Belfast, fared just as well in points in “The Press” Centennial Cup competition from their senior rugby meeting at Denton Oval'on Wednesday night. Both sides were awarded the maximum of 20 points —- the first time that two riVal teams have, been given perfect scores. The ' competition, started last year, relates to behaviour (a possible of 12 points)
and endeavour to play constructive rugby (eight points). It is decided on the first full round of C.S.B. Cup matches. Mr Mike Fitzgerald, who refereed the ChristchurchBelfast match, said that he had no hesitation in giving both teams the possible.
“It was one of the hardest, but cleanest-fought games I have had. The spirit was excellent and both sides gave of their best. It was a
pleasure to control,” said Mr Fitzgerald.
In the other match on Wednesday night Linwood earned 16 points in “The Press” Cup competition, the split being nine . and seven, and Shirley 15, nine and six. The round of night games has now been completed and after five rounds High School Old Boys leads the table from the two University sides. The points are: Old Boys 89, University A
and University B 84. Belfast 83, Marist 82, Albion 80, Lincoln College 79, New Brighton 77, Christchurch 76, Linwood 74, Merivale-Pa-panui and Suburbs 73. Shirley and Burnside 72, Hornby and Sydenham 69. In yesterday’s report of the Christchurch-Belfast game, Dave Thompson was mentioned as playing, and scoring a try, for Belfast. This was incorrect. The try scorer was Jack Oldridge.
