The concept of a return to coal fired ships is being taken seriously by no less prestigious an organisation than Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, which has seen fit to publish a booklet on the subject. ... , ■ The world-wide shipping classification society has issued a publication entitled “Guidance Notes for the Burning of Coal in Ships Boilers,” something that would seem to be more appropriate in the 1830 s instead of the 1980 s. The publication was issued as a result of interest being shown, especially in Australia, in the feasibility of returning to coal as a fuel alternative to oil. The booklet gives guidance on the statutory and classification aspects of using coal as a fuel at sea as the primary source of heat to generate steam for main and auxiliary services. But, in line with modern times, the booklet assumes throughout that no manual handling of coal would be contemplated and that boiler firing would be by some form .of automated grate. But other, more innovative firing methods are not ruled out. Lloyd’s says it will consider other systems for approval as well, such as pulverised fuel, slurries of coal, oil, and water, or fluidised bed firing. The booklet contains sections covering coal storage and handling burning equipment, shin structure, electrical equipment, control systems, fire safety,' and other facets of coal firing.
