Residents seek preservation of area’s identity
Concern about the encroachment of commercial activities into a residential zone was expressed by residents of the inner-city west area of Christchurch on Wednesday evening. About 30 residents and interested members of the public met to discuss zoning and community participation in an area bounded by the Avon River, Victoria Street, Bealey Avenue, Durham Street, and Cashel Street. The name, “Inner City Operation Neighbourhood,” was agreed on by the group. Mr D.. Thornley said that it was important for the community to have an identity so that it could present group submissions and objections to zoning proposals in the district scheme.
The group agreed that it would be necessary to ex* amine properties within the area and determine those “at risk.” Land zoned Commercial 3 was the main threat to preserving the residential
character of the area. It was apparent that several commercial interests were pushing to get into the area, said the Rev. J. Roberts. ‘‘We must be ready to take them on,” he said.
The group was also concerned about encroachment by North Canterbury Hospital Board developments and the Education Department, and the future of land owned by the Lands and Survey Department. More information would be required on the area’s zoning. Other issues raised included the level of inner-city pollution, and residents’ concern about the speed of traffic on Montreal Street.
A community involvement group discussed the possibility of using a room at the Arts Centre for community activities, neighbourhood meetings, and pre-school facilities. Suggested activities included a survey of children and their needs in the area, and a group tour of the area.
