Avon ‘staggered’
The promotions manager for Radio Avon, Mr Warren Grant, has been “staggered” by the number of local bands submitting tapes for an album which Avon intends to record, produce, and distribute. Thirty-two bands sent tapes to Radio Avon, 90 per cent of the groups coming from Christchurch, Warren Grant said.
Most of the bands came out of the “woodwork.” “I did not know some of them existed, and the quality of the groups were surprising,” he added.
An auditions committee, made up of Grant Shanks, the chief copywriter for Radio Avon, Morrie Shanahan, the programme director, formerly an announcer with 3ZM, Wayne Garton, the operations manager, and Warren Grant, will listen to the tapes next Thursday to select an initial 15 bands.
From these, 10 groups will be selected to go into Tandem Studios in July to record their songs, and the album will be released in September.
