Protest at jailing of cleric

PA Wellington The Presbyterian Church has written a letter of protest to the Government of Taiwan about the arrest and imprisonment of the leader of the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church. The letter signed by the Moderator (Mrs Joan Anderson) and the convenor of the international relations committee (the Rev. Dr J. Veitch) protests against the detention of the Rev. Dr C. M. Kao, general secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan. . The New Zealanders asked for “just and proper procedures” and in particular an open trial for Dr Kao. Dr Veitch said the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan was the largest Christian group in Taiwan and had been involved, with other groups such as the Buddhists, in a struggle against Government moves to restrict the activities of religious groups in Taiwan. Reports from Hong Kong had said that Dr Kao would be tried in secret by the military.
