Frozen pigs will not be dumped
The Pork Marketing Board is still trying to decide what to do with the 10,000 frozen pigs it bought to protect domestic prices. The board felt it was obliged to buy the pigs to keep prices up and farmers m business after about $7 million worth of pork had been imported privately. It was now "looking closely at the possibility of using the surplus carcases in some manufacturing process,’’ said the secretary of the board (Mr D. J. Dobson) from Wellington yesterday. He described as “irresponsible rubbish’’ reported suggestions that the frozen pigs might be dumped at sea or exported as foreign aid. None of the carcases had been sold, but the board had no intention of wasting them, said Mr Dobson.
