Coal exports to start

Shipping reporter The first Buller coal destined for Japan is expected to arrive at Lyttelton on May 14, to await shipment, according to informed sources at the port. The full consignment of 35,000 tonnes is expected to be loaded later in the month. It will be the first of possibly five shipments of Buller coal to Japan through Lyttelton this year. Japanese representatives visited Lyttelton on Monday to inspect the coal-loading facilities which, if export prospects look promising, will be modernised in the next few months. The commercial manager of State Coal in Wellington (Mr J. Smith) would not confirm the May shipment, saying only that a statement on coal exports would be made by the Minister- of Energy, Mr Birch, next week. Each 35,000-tonne shipment will be loaded at the Cashin Quay No. 1 berth. Each shipment will’ fill about 3000 railway waggons. . . • ‘ The coal initially will be trucked from the waggons to a stockpile but,? longterm plans call for an underground conveyor system.
