Imports of pig meat
Sir, — The New Zealand Government has done it again. Desperate to control inflation and keep the consumer price index down, it has allowed the Canadians to dump pig meat on the New Zealand market. Because of Americans trade embargo against’Russia, a large excess of feed grain in North America has' enabled the production of cheap pig meat. The imporation of this meat will initially hold down pig meat prices. In the. longer term it will bankrupt the New Zealand pig industry, causing further unemployment and wasting $BO million -of overseas funds in pigmeat imports, lower incomes for New Zealand cropping farmers, and when the supply of pig meat from Canada runs out, cause high prices for pig meat. I hope the housewife appreciates this short-term gain as pork, ham and bacon could be unobtainable at any price in the future. —Yours, etc., A. N. FRIZZELL. May 6, 1980.
