About 700 members of the Maori Women’s Welfare League will be in Timaru next week for their 28th national conference, beginning on May 12. The four-day conference will be opened by the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch), after the Maori welcome at , the Arowhenua Marae, in 'Temuka. An authority bn Maori language and culture, Professor S. M. Meads, ’ of Victoria University, will address the conference. Dame Te Atairangikaahu will be among the guests. The remits show a wide range of social concern among the league’s members, ranging from custody rights for fathers to opposition to milk in cartons. Unemployment, licensing hoiirs, education, and the

introduction of compulsory Maori language courses will be discussed.
