Embassy blast A powerful home-made bomb ripped through an annex of the Libyan embassy in Paris, causing widespread damage but no casualties, the police said. The bomb, which went off just before 5 a.m., had been placed outside the door of the building. Windows of about a dozen neighbouring buildings were shattered by the blast and eight cars parked near the embassy building were damaged, the police said. It was not immediately known who was responsible for the blast. —Paris. ■ 1973 murder sequel Three men, two of them alleged Irish Republican guerrillas, have appeared in court in Belfast over the murder seven years ago of the West German industrialist, Thomas Niedermayer. The managing director of the Grundig Electronics Company’s Northern Ireland division, Mr Niedermayer was abducted from his home Tn west Belfast on December 17, 1973. Two months - ago the’ police discovered a decomposed body on the [outskirts of Belfast which-;; they identified as that of Mr Niedermayer, who had been West Germany’s honorary consul in Northern Ireland.— Belfast. Sao Paulo clashes Fifty-four people were injured and dozens arrested when the police clashed violently with striking metalworkers in Sao Paulo’s industrial suburb of Sao Bernardo do Campo, according to eyewitnesses. The police used clubs, tear-gas and water cannons to break up gatherings of strikers. Small groups responded by throwing rocks at the police and blocking traffic with burning barriers. The metalworkers, on the thirty-fifth day of their walk-out, want higher wages, a shorter work week and job stability guarantees. The strike has virtually paralysed Brazil’s car-making industry.—Sao Paulo. Second crash A joint United StatesBrits h-Canadian military exercise has been suspended after a second United States Air Force fighter crashed at the Cold Lake air weapons range in north-eastern Alberta. The pilot bailed out and was taken to a base hospital with minor injuries. A few days earlier two United States airmen -were killed when their Phantom fig h t e r-bomber crashed, causing a 4000 ha forest fire.. — Cold Lake.
