Neuroscience expansion

The North Canterbury Hospital Board wishes to appoint a third neurologist at Christchurch Hospital as part of a big expansion in neuroscience over the next two years.

Medical and surgical treatment of conditions associated with diseases of the nervous system (neurology and neurosurgery) will be undertaken in wards of the proposed $25 million third stage of the redevelopment of Christchurch Hospital. The two wards for neuroscience will be adjacent to each other and close to the new operating theatres. Later this year a $900,000 body scanner will be installed and the board’s first neurosurgeon appointed. Both these moves are designed to make Christchurch Hospital the centre for neurosurgery in the South Island. The New Zealand Neurological Foundation recently subscribed $5OOO to the hospital board loan. Last year the Canterbury branch of the Foundation raised about $lB,OOO in its annual postal appeal.
