Canterbury swept aside

, pa Hastings Auckand began its run- for ; a fifth successive Russell ■ Grace victory when it swept ’ aside one of the favoured . teams, Canterbury,--by 4| to 1 j in the second round of the championship at ,the Hast- ■ ings golf club yesterday. , Both teams, had byes in 'Monday’s first, round and the victory over Canterbury, which finished third j in. last year’s event at Lochiel, now places Auckland in. a strong position to. take out this year’s championship. ’ The Auckland No. 1 and New Zealand-representative Mrs Cherry Kingham, who was two down at the turn against Mrs . Sue Bishop, made an amazing comeback by winning' the next five holes for a 4 and 2 win. Mrs Bishop had played consistently in the first nine, but she saw her lead whittled away with putting errors on the homeward nine. Kaye Maxwell made three birdies in her 5 and 3 victory over Mrs Adrienne Bond and Mrs Allison Hasey capitalised on putting errors

by Mrs Sue Haydon in her 3 and 1 win. / Mrs Jocelyn Glanfield, playing at No. 4 for Auckland walked to an early three-up lead over 1 Jeanette Ross and was never headed in her 4 and 3 win. The 17-year-old Karrin Young looked to be heading for a first when she •- was four down against Mrs Vai Cullen, but the, national junior trialist rallied to take the last four holes to square the match and consolidate the Auckland win. Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley, which on Monday beat Southland 3|-11> preserved its unbeaten record when it dished out a 5-0, thrashing to Taranaki. The host province, Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay made a good start to the tournament with a 3|-1| victory over Otago, which on Monday whipped Taranaki, 4-1-The Nelson-West - CoastMarlborOugh team caused the first upset of the tournament when it beat Wellington 3-2. In the afternoon round,

however, Canterbury avenged its earlier defect with a 4-1 win over Bay of PlentyThames Valley. A hole-in-one by Bay of Ple n t y-Thames Valley’s Brenda Rhodes, did little to help her team in her match against Sue Bishop. Mrs Rhodes, a New Zealand representative, holed out with her four-iron shot on the 146-metre fourth hole. While the shot enabled her to win the hole, it was of little assistance as Mrs Bishop held on to her slender lead and eventually took the match two-up. Another hole-in-one was scored by Jenny Kellahan, of South Canterbury at the 124-metre eighth hole while playing Otago’s Melainie Irvine, but her moment of glory was shortlived as Miss Irvine strode to a 6 and 5 victory. Mrs Kellahan used a sixiron to record her first hole-in-one. Her team’s match was halved. . Four teams — Auckland, Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, Northland and Waikato-King Country — enter today’s fourth round unbeaten.
