I ,| Prime cattle j Values for some prime cattle improved $5 to $lO and over all the market for good quality beef was consistent and sound. ’ The yarding was reduced from 404 last week to 353 and this encouraged strong ■ competition from buyers for the trade., A surprisingly large number of cows was yarded but most were in prime condition and. received plenty of ■attention from buyers, i. A consistent supplier to [the market. Spencerville Partnership, topped the steer, market with a sale of $390. ■The best price for heifers was $354, and for cows [5322. Heifers and steers to 220 kg sold between 119 c and 123 c; between 220 kg and 270 kg, from 118 c to 121 c; and over 270 kg 117 c. Vealers j In line with the improved tone of the beef market, prices for good vealers im-. proved several dollars. The: best of the steers in the yarding of 33 (31 last week) sold to $254. Heifers ranged to $214 and bulls to $221. Dairy cattle Dairy cattle had a particularly good sale and demand for' the three cows offered was strong. The yarding was three laot week, too. A heifer and calf sold for $350, one cow and calf for $3BO, and a another heifer for $3OO. Store sheep Although competition was limited the demand for forward condition store lambs was strong and values for these remained consistent with previous sales. Only 1034 lambs were yarded (2248 last week) and this helped to maintain late rates. I The best of the crossbred ewe lambs made .to $20.60 and fine-wool ewe lambs sold to $16.40. The 1094 ewes yarded were of mixed quality and breed. However graziers supported this market well and values’ remained firm. Sales of store sheep included.— Store lambs: P. R. and N. N. Blunden (Port Levy), 95 Coopworth ewe lambs at $17.60; M. H. and J. G. Wells (Ashley Gorge), 150 Romney ewe lambs at $12.70 to $16.60, 411 Romney wether lambs at $11.60 to $15.40; A. M. and N. I. at $l9 to $20.60; E. A. Shand (Culverden), 362 Corriedale wether lambs at $9.60 to $12.80. Adult ewes: M. W. and L. I. Bradley (Little Akaloa), S 3 Perendales at $15.80; A. A. D. and E. M. Barker (Waiau), 358 Halfbreds at $l4. Fat pigs The fat pig market did not fully reflect the big drop in schedule that the wholesalers had announced. Poorerfinished and light-weight pigs were an exception and these did not sell well. Good quality pigs had a sound sale at rates slightly below last week’s and competition for these remained strong until the end of the sale. A very large market of choppers was ako well supported, mainly because quality was better than usual. Values were;— Light pork: $5O to $6O. Heavy pork and light! bacon: $6O to $72. Medium bacon: $75 to $B5. Heavy bacon: $B5 to $lOl. Light choppers: $7O to $B5. Heavy choppers: $95 to $lO5. Store pigs Local buyers strongly supported the store pig market and values remained similar to last week’s sale. The large line of advertised pigs made up the bulk of the entry and generally quality was good. The market for large store pigs was oversupplied and values eased $5 but slips and weaners showed little change. Good quality weaner-s again had the best of the market and many of these made $2O to $25. Values were: — Small weaners: $l5 to $2O. Good weaners and small slips: $2O to $2B. Slips and small stores. $29 to $36. Good stores: $37 to $44.
