THE LAW
Rabbit farming was legalised by an Order In Council in January, this year. Six breeds — angora, Californian, chinchilla, Flemish giant, New Zealand white and rex — were approved for farming. Previously, the Agricultural Pests Destruction Act, 1967, prevented any rabbits being farmed or sold for commercial gain. It was amended in December, 1979, by the Agricultural Pests Destruction Amendment Act to provide for the Order in Council. Conditions imposed were:— — Rabbits must be housed and restricted in a manner that prevents any chance of them escaping. — Rabbits may not range freely or graze pasture. — Exempted rabbits must be purebred specimens of their breed.
