Happenings
If you are interested in crafts, especially knitting, a group being formed in Christchurch could . offer you new scope. Mrs Maude Teague is setting up a Shetland Association. A Shetlander herself, she aims to preserve and encourage the traditional
Shetland crafts. She wants to stop the ancient craft’s proud name being bandiedabout, even used on goods that contain no wool at all. Mrs Teague is optimistic that a small, specialised cottage industry could be developed. Did you know that 20,000 Shetlanders live in New Zealand? You can contact Mrs Teague at the association’s registered office, Latimer View House, P.O. Box 21113. A New Yorker who is watching the way New Zealand women work together in groups will be the guest speaker at the Christchurch Society For Research on Women’s annual meeting this week. The branch meets on Wednesday evening to hear Michele Dominy, and attend to business for the year. ■ S; ❖ * Opposing views on the role of multi-national corporations in our lives will be aired at the Y.W.C.A., on Friday evening. Ann Hercus, member of Parliament for Lyttelton, and Philip Harden, managing Director of Meadow Mushrooms, will take sides. The debate will be chaired by Richard Kennaway, senior lecturer in political science at the University of Canterbury.
