New German envoy
PA Wellington The West German Embassy in Wellington has an Ambassador for the first time in more than a year. Dr Hans Alfred Steger, aged 54, arrived in Wellington yesterday to replace Dr Karl Doering, who returned to Germany early last year for health reasons.
Dr Doering left New Zealand amid controversy over his membership of the Waffen S.S. in World War 11. Dr Steger has served in Amman, Tripoli, and Paris, and was responsible for opening the German Embassy in Peking in 1972. He has also been head of the South and South-East' / Asia division of the Foreign Office in Bonn.
