Robber of papergirl jailed
PA Wellington A man who robbed a newspaper girl outside Press House in Willis Street, Wellington, last month was imprisoned for four months yesterday. Michael John Connolly, aged 36, unemployed, of no fixed abode, appeared in the District Court for sentence after pleading guilty to robbing the girl of $6 on April 8.
Judge Bate said Connolly had a record for assault and carrying an offensive' weapon. “Any man with such a record who threatens a young girl selling newspapers must be considered a serious criminal,” he said. Counsel (Mr N. Hewitt) said Connolly had walked up to the girl and made her hand over the money by pretending he had a gun, though it was only a metal cigarette lighter.
