Akaroa reclamation
Sir ; —ln the “Mainland Touch” last night we were presented with the plans of the Akaroa County Council for the development of the reclaimed area, otherwise known as the “old dump.” This was made to appear as the brainchild of the present council, which is far from the truth. This scheme was promulgated by the town committee approximately 10 years ago when there was much discussion on the continuity of dumping and reclaiming this area. The tides were then eroding the foundations of the tennis courts and a decision was then made to reclaim this area for public facilities. A plan was proposed by one member for an even larger area and for a road bringing the traffic directly through the reclaimed area, but this was opposed by the engineer as not being practical. I am glad to hear that the present committee now finds it practical and is reverting to an original plan.—Yours, etc., A. W. ERICSON, May 3, 1980.
